KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM
(General Curriculum)
Religion: Our religious education program aims to provide experiences which help
students learn about our faith. In addition, it is meant to encourage them to live
our faith through prayer, sharing, and trying to be a good community member.
Lessons will focus on God’s love for them, Jesus, relationships, creation, as well as
activities based on the seasons of the Church. We will incorporate many of our
religious activities into our language arts program through book making, story
retelling, and writing.
Language Arts: The goal of our language arts program is to enable each student to
have a firm foundation of phonics before they enter the first grade reading
program. We will be using a variety of strategies that include the use of Big
Books, individual mini books for students, sight words, poetry, songs, class books,
lists, retelling stories, journal writing, word chains, and story writing. You will find
that many of our reading and writing activities go hand-in-hand with one another.
This is important at any reading level. Our goal is to set up learning experiences
that will challenge students at every reading level, yet not overwhelm them.
Mathematics: Our math program is a “hands-on” approach to learning mathematical
concepts. For everything we teach, there will be a concrete learning tool for
children to manipulate. Students will spend time exploring, sorting and classifying,
measuring, working with numbers, describing and comparing objects, and working
with probability and statistics. Many times, they will be asked to record the
processes they are using as well as the findings. The class will be using the
Harcourt math curriculum as well as “Math Their Way”.
Science/Health: We will cover basic topics such as seasons, weather, animal life,
plants, insects, our bodies, good and nutrition, and nature activities.
Art: Art experiences help children discover their own uniqueness. Art motivates
children to use their imagination. Art is included in all areas of the curriculum.
Spanish: We will incorporate the very basics of Spanish at the introductory level.
Examples of what the children will be learning in Spanish include colors, days of the
week, months of the year, numbers, and basic greetings.
(Specialty Curriculum)
Music: Ms. Karla Dudley is our music specialist. She will be meeting with the kindergarten
classes two days a week. Kindergarten music classes are scheduled for Tuesday and
Thursday mornings from 10:30-11:00am. Music will also be an important piece of your
childs daily classroom experience.
P.E.: Mrs. Lowe is our physical education specialist at St. Rose School. Mrs. Lowe
will be meeting with the students two days a week in the gym. Kindergarten P.E. classes
are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursadys from 2:10-2:30pm. P.E. Shoes (tennis shoes with
non-marking soles) must be worn to P.E. Students may keep their shoes in their cubby, and
change into them for P.E., or wear them to school on scheduled P.E. days.
Computers: Mr. Lance is our computer specialist. Our scheduled kindergarten computer
time is Wednesday afternoons from 1:20-1:55pm.
Library: Mrs. O'Leary is our librarian. She will meet with the kindergarten class once
a week. Kindergarten library times are scheduled for Friday afternoons from 1:15-1:45pm.
KINDERGARTEN SPECIFICS
The following is a list of specifics regarding our kindergarten program.
VIP of the Week: Each week we will have a class VIP. The week before your child
is scheduled to be VIP, you will receive a letter detailing suggested items your
child may wish to bring to class. These will include family photos, special baptismal
items, a favorite toy, pet, and more. Our VIP bulletin board will be displayed
outside the room in the hall. Parents are also encouraged to come in for a visit
during their child’s week and read a story, share an ethnic food, or a family
tradition.
Scientist of the Week: Each week, one student will be selected to be our
classroom scientist of the week. The scientist of the week will be able to plan and
demonstrate either an experiment or science lesson to the rest of the class. A
form will be sent home the week prior to the scheduled presentation for you to
help your child complete. The form will ask you to name the experiment, materials
needed, and describe what will happen. We will collect these forms and make a
class book of science experiments for each student to take home at the end of the
year.
Sharing: Sharing will take place right before lunch recess every day. The
students will be randomly assigned a sharing day.
Water bottles: Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school each
day. If it is carried inside a backpack, you may want to seal it in a Ziploc baggy to
avoid spills. The water bottles will be kept on the counter next to the sink, so that
students can get drinks as needed throughout the day.
Snacks: Please sign up to provide snacks for the class during the year. Dry cereal,
crackers, fruit, etc. all make good snacks for the students. Due to allergies, all snacks
should be peanut and shellfish free.
