St. Rose friends and families purchased a three octave set of Malmark English Handbells in 2006. Each bell was individually purchased and carries an inscription in the handle. Handbell choir is offered as a middle school elective one or two trimesters each year. Previous music experience is not required. If time allows, a beginning and advanced choir is formed each trimester. Hand bells are a wonderful way for students to learn basic music notation and rhythm, and each choir becomes a small group ministry both to the members and to the community. The group is well known in the community and is asked to play for various events and organizations.
In December, the group plays for the Festival of Nativities at the Church of Latter Day Saints, for Pioneer Lions and Peace Health events, and at retirement homes in addition to the school Advent program. Each member of the choir experiences a sense of pride in representing their school and parish community and takes this responsibility seriously. The choir is the only youth hand bell choir in the area and is always accepting donations to help with equipment and music costs. They would like to expand our bell set to four octaves when possible.
